Did you know if you do not want to follow a routine and you would like to feed your baby on demand my feeding book is the book for you? Lots of clients readers and friends have said they had no idea the feeding book covered things like the below! Learning from the animal kingdom Most animals when they are born are able to find their own way to the nipple for the first time. For example, my own children and I watched in fascination as a newborn gorilla at the Dublin Zoo found his way to his mother’s breast. Some research has found that babies offered skin-to-skin contact on their mother’s chest after birth snuggle and move until they find the nipple and start to feed. This usually occurs around 55 minutes after birth. If you have had an uncomplicated birth and you are happy to try it, why not ask your midwife if you can follow this approach? It may also be something you would like to include in your birth plan. Tips for demand-feeding your breastfed or bottle-fed baby • If you are breastfeeding, try to follow my feeding guide from your baby’s birth until your milk comes in (see page 54). • Only feed your baby when she cries a hungry cry. • Do not feed your baby in the last 20 minutes before going down for a sleep or nap as you will be teaching her to feed to sleep. • Try to follow a feed–play–sleep approach. • Aim to start and finish your baby’s day at the same time, ideally a 7 am to 7 pm day. • If you come to a sticky patch where your baby is catnapping, early-rising, night-waking or not settling, follow my routines exactly and once your baby is happy and settled you can go back to demand-feeding. Do you have my feeding book shop.saveoursleep.au/product/2390/71862/ and if so what do you think of it?
