Did you know it is illegal to connect an electric fence directly to the wall socket (230 volts)? Tragic cases have been recorded of humans and animals that have been maimed or killed when they inadvertently got into contact with live electric fences that are connected directly to a 230v power supply. How an electric fence operates A pulse of electric current is sent along the fence wire, about one pulse per second, from an energizer (fence controller) which is grounded. When an animal touches the fence, it completes the circuit between the fence and the ground and receives a short, sharp but safe shock. The shock is sufficiently memorable that the animal never forgets. Installation tips i. Electric fences shall be installed and operated so that they cause no electrical hazard to persons, animals or their surroundings. ii. Never electrify barbed or razor wire. iii. The fence controller earth electrode should penetrate the ground to a depth of at least 1 m and not be within 10 m of any power, telecommunications or other system. iv. All electric fences must be connected using a fence controller which must be installed in a shelter. v. Regularly inspect the supply cord and fence controller for any damage. If found damaged in any way, immediately cease use of the fence controller and return it to an authorised service centre for repair in order to avoid a hazard. vi. Fence controllers with a standby mode may turn on or off without warning. The fence controller must be disconnected from the mains supply if it needs to be rendered fully inoperative. vii. Make sure the electrified line or electric net does not lose power by ‘Earthing’ i.e. it should not touch anything, including vegetation, apart from the insulators or insulated posts. viii. The earth rod(s) and connection to earth are secure. ix. Do not connect the fence controller simultaneously to a fence and to any other device, otherwise, if lightning strikes your fence, the current will be conducted to all other devices. x. A warning sign must be attached to the electric fence. The background colour of both sides of the warning sign shall be yellow. The inscription on the sign shall be black and shall be either: the substance of “CAUTION: Electric Animal Fence” or, the symbol shown: For the benefit of the general public, below are tips to be followed when an electric fence is installed: i. Do NOT get into contact with the live electric fence with any part of the body ii. Do not attempt to climb over, enter through the strands or under a multi -wire electric fence. Use a gate or a specially designated entry point. iii. Always treat all electric fences as live (switched ON).
