Did you know that Australia has been assisting restore infrastructure, services and livelihoods and address governance and other challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Balochistan since 2010? The World Bank reports that KP and FATA have consistently been amongst the poorest regions in Pakistan, and that the 2009 insurgency and subsequent security operations have displaced an estimated 2 million people and caused significant damage to infrastructure and livelihoods, and negatively impacted the social and economic fabric of the region. Australia’s AUD 31.28 million support to date has been provided through the World Bank’s Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) for the Border Areas. The MDTF supports a ten year peace-building strategy for the border areas, developed from recommendations in the Post Crisis Needs Assessment. The Fund provides a coordinated financing mechanism for the Governments of KP and Balochistan, and the FATA Secretariat to invest in multiple sectors with the overall objective of supporting reconstruction and development to recover from the crisis and support long-term rehabilitation.
