Did you know that CHT has the *oldest manually played* carillon in the United States??? It was a gift in 1882 from Mr. Joseph Temple, a Quaker dry goods merchant, in loving memory of his wife Martha Anna Kirkley Temple. The bells were cast at the celebrated foundry of Severin Van Aerschodt in Louvain, Belgium and arrived in Philadelphia on the 18th of July in 1882. Its bells were first rung at the opening of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, held at CHT in October, 1883. The carillon was rebuilt and restored (and an automatic chiming system added) in 2000-2001 thanks to a generous gift from Mrs. Emilie Smith Busch De Hellebranth, a parishioner, and was rededicated on April 29, 2001. The carillon is equipped with a mechanism that plays hymns daily at Noon, 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. #philly #rittenhousesquare #centercity #philadelphia #visitPhilly #rittenhouserow #centercitydistrict #church #holytrinity #trinity #phillymag #phillydotcom #discoverPHL #lovephilly #rittenhouse #community #welcome #center #city #arts #architecture #history #bells #carillon #Episcopal #hymns #ringmybell #oldest #manually #chiming
