Did you know that Greek is the oldest language by first written - TopicsExpress

Did you know that Greek is the oldest language by first written account, that is nowadays still spoken? :) (Actually, we could say its Coptic, because one of the oldest written languages, Ancient Egyptian is its ancestor, but unfortunately Coptic has died out in Ethiopia and is only used for religious purposes). Next we have Arabic, which again isnt straightforward the same language over the years, but is a daughter-language of the Eblaite language, which is classified as the oldest Semitic language. The second-oldest Indo-European language to be written was Hittite, which made up a branch of the Anatolian family of IE languages. Today we dont have an actual Anatolian language, but some linguists argue that this family gave birth to the Proto-Armenian language. Next we have Chinese, whose writing was first attested to be of c. 1200 BC on the so called Oracle bones. Next we have Hebrew, Latin, Lepontic (Celtic). Follows a language on a somewhat controversial topic, Thracian. Spoken c. 600 BC, some scholars assume its direct relative is todays Albanian. We also have Persian, which was first attested c. 500 BC. 10 oldest still surviving languages: 1. (Coptic) 2. Greek 3. Arabic 4. (Armenian) 5. Chinese 6. Hebrew 7. Latin 8. Irish (via Continental Irish, via Lepontic) 9. (Albanian)/Georgian* 10. Persian/Tamil* * If we decide not to count Coptic and Latin as they are used for religious purposes, 9 and 10 go to Georgian and Tamil (first Dravidian language attested). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_first_written_accounts
