Did you know that President Thomas Jefferson established the DC National Guard, then Militia, during his presidency because Maryland and Virginia both had militias but the President didnt have a household guard of his own? Even today, the DC National Guard works for the President of the United States, and it is the only Guard to have a Commanding General. Also, did you know that Francis Scott Key, the author of our National Anthem was a Lieutenant in the DC Militia...not that of Maryland? Use these factoids at your next dinner party.
