Did you know that Rueben Storbeck, our own slope grooming manager, was at the Winter Olympics in Russia as part of the operations team? I had the opportunity of a life-time, to be a part of the Winter Olympics operations team, at Rosa Khutor, that prepared and maintained the Mens and Womens downhill courses. We had to be there a season before the games to familiarize ourselves with the resort, culture and the surroundings. It was amazing to witness the amount of work that had to be done: we had a 24 hour work force. It was an unbelievable team effort with experienced operators from all over the world. I was involved in grooming the downhill courses that had 80% black rated grading. Some of this was only made possible by anchoring the machine to steel structures to stop it from sliding down the run and enable it to climb back up the slope. A nerve racking experience at times! The memories will stay with me forever just like the friends I made when working there. Its now great to be back in Africa, using these skills on the Afriski slopes
