Did you know that Vikings trained cats? Yes, cats. “Trained them to do what exactly?, asked a distinctively unconvinced Peter Florence, director of Hay Festival. “Well, when they were engaged in combat, Vikings used to throw cats at their opponents heads. Can you imagine, if a cat comes hurtling at your face, you dont have much hope of being able to see what youre doing,” explained Cressida Cowell, author of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. Cowell had dozens of tips and ideas for her young audience to encourage them to write and keep reading, and admitted that, when shes writing, sometimes she actually laughs out loud: “if you cant make yourself laugh, then what chance have you got of making anyone laugh?” And how does she create her baddies? “I try to scare myself and it works because the worse I can make a character in my head, the more you seem to love them.”
