Did you know that cats can get heartworm disease too? The Risk Is - TopicsExpress

Did you know that cats can get heartworm disease too? The Risk Is Real. We just diagnosed our FIRST POSITIVE HEARTWORM CASE OF THE YEAR, and it was in a KITTY. While many of you may be familiar with heartworm disease in dogs, it is important to know that this serious medical condition also affects cats and ferrets. Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoe bites, and just one bite from an affected mosquitoe can infect your cat. Because mosquitoes are often found inside homes, an indoor lifestyle does not protect your cat. A recent survey by the Companion Animal Parasite Council (capcvet.org/capc-recommendations/feline-heartworm.) showed that 25% to 30% of heartworm-positive cats were considered to be strictly indoor cats by their owners. That’s why the American Heartworm Society recommends that cats be given year-round prevention to ensure protection. Prevention is the best medicine, since there is no approved treatment for feline heartworm disease. And heartworm disease can be fatal.
