Did you know that only two percent of genetically modified (GM) soy is eaten by people? In fact, the vast majority of the GM crops in the world are being fed to animals in factory farms, also known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). GM crops are linked to greatly expanded use of pesticides, as well as to a host of serious health, social justice, and environmental concerns. Since livestock in factory farms are the primary consumers of GM crops, GMO Inside (one of the Food Revolution Network’s partners) has decided to do something about it. In a stunning display of the power of consumer action, the campaign was victorious. Earlier this year, General Mills announced that it was reformulating the yellow box (original flavor) Cheerios to be made without the use of genetically modified ingredients. Now GMO Inside is focusing its next campaign on Starbucks. The company uses more than 93 million gallons of milk per year. And while Starbucks offers organic soymilk, all of its cows milk comes from factory-farmed animals who are fed genetically modified feed. There are a lot of problems with most organic milk, including recent revelations that some organic milk production facilities like those operated by Horizon were found to have cows that are confined and will never see a blade of grass in their lives. But the Starbucks campaign is highlighting the reality that factory farms are the primary consumers of GMOs, and challenging the world’s largest coffee selling outlet, a company that likes to present itself as hip and green, to take leadership and do something about it.
