Did you know that sharing your food with your dog can cause pancreatitis? Pancreatitis refers to inflammation and irritation of the pancreas, often as a result of too many fatty foods or table scraps. It can be mild (with a lack of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, depression and diarrhea), but if left untreated, it can lead to shock and may require hospitalization. If you dog develops pancreatitis once, he is likely to develop pancreatitis again, as damage to the pancreas is hard to repair. Pancreatitis can be prevented by limiting (or eliminating) fatty food and table scraps, and maintaining a healthy diet and healthy weight. Some fatty table scraps that you should NOT share with your dog include: pork products or hot dogs, any fat scraps from beef or other red meats, butter and many other dairy products, et cetera. If you notice that your dog is showing signs of pancreatitis, contact a veterinarian immediately! - Alpine Animal Staff (928) 774 9441
