Did you know that sometimes a woodpecker drums on a hollow limb, - TopicsExpress

Did you know that sometimes a woodpecker drums on a hollow limb, not to find insects, but simply to make music? I learned this recently and i was deeply touched by it. Im not sure why, but it touched me. It is to announce its territory or to attract a mate. Woodpeckers dont have a distinctive song in their vocabulary, but they do have a distinctive rhythm. I saw a woodpecker drumming on a hollow oak limb, and i thought, It cant be getting insects from that wood. Its too hard. I watched, and saw that it wasnt eating any insects. Later, i asked my knowledgeable friend Andrew Joslin and he filled me in.
