Did you know, that the Bible warns against big government?? In I Samuel, chapter 8, the people of Israel ask the prophet Samuel to appont a king over them, like the other people groups or nations had. It seems the Israelite people desired a more perfect union. It seems like a noble notion, all Jews united under one ruler....kind of like what Hitler wanted centuries later for all German people (sarcasm) This is Samuels warning against a central power.... This is what the king....will do. He will take your sons and make them serve with his horses and chariots (military, draft)......He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves.....He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage.....the best of your cattle and donkeys.....He will take a tenth of your flocks (TAXES TAXES TAXES).....When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king YOU have chosen...... I Samuel 8:11-18.
