Did you know that the flags of most Muslim countries today are actually based on a template designed by the British? The British wanted to dissolve the Ottoman Empire at the time of World War I by establishing Arab nationalism through Sharif Hussain ibn Ali. So the British diplomat, Sir Mark Sykes drew up the flag for the Arab Revolt to try to create a feeling of Arab-ness to fuel the revolt. And, until today, this remains the template for the flags of many Muslim countries, such as Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates to name a few. So the next time you proudly display such a flag with a sense of nationalism—think twice about what that flag actually means.
