Did you know that…the peace sign (symbol) was designed and first - TopicsExpress

Did you know that…the peace sign (symbol) was designed and first used in the United Kingdom in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; the internationally recognized symbol for peace was originally designed in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement by Gerald Holtom and became a major symbol of the 1960s counterculture. In the United States and Canada, it became synonymous with opposition to the Vietnam War. Interestingly, it was derived through a combination of the semaphore signals (think of the flags you see in classic movies when one ship is communicating with another) for the letters N and D, standing for nuclear disarmament. In semaphore the letter N is formed by a person holding two flags in an inverted V, and the letter D is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. If you superimpose these two signs forms the shape of the center of the peace symbol.
