For more information please call 843-693-8441 American Red Cross and Tri-Command Dental Clinics Dental Assistant Program (DAP) Information Section One: Course Purpose The Dental Assistant Program is a training program designed to provide basic education and skills needed to successfully volunteer at the Dental Clinic at Parris Island and Beaufort MC Air Station. Section Two: Participant Pre-Requisites Current Military ID (active duty, dependant, civilian) – with base privileges Registered American Red Cross Volunteer US Citizenship – copy of birth certificate and immunization record at time of interview Up-to-Date Immunization Record - list of required immunizations provided by Beaufort Naval Hospital or check with Red Cross office Section Three: What Is Expected of Volunteers To ensure a productive Instructor to Participant ratio, class size is limited to 20 participants - therefore it is imperative that participants understand the scope of the training and the commitment that is required. CPR/AED Certification (American Red Cross) or BLS (Heart Association). A current certificate with one of these class names must be presented on day of interview. Classroom: 80 hours of mandatory classroom instruction followed by testing. To successfully pass the classroom portion, students must attend all classroom sessions to move on, and score at least 75% on the final test. Chair-side: At least 600 hours of chair-side practical experience to be completed within 6 months. The expectation for all participants is at least 24 hours per week. This is necessary because participants are required to train in a variety of dentistry areas. Additional Information: This course, both classroom and chair-side portions, will be conducted in English. During the chair-side portion, any DAP participant who does not volunteer for three consecutive weeks will be automatically disqualified from the program unless a verifiable emergency exists. Each chair-side training segment has a specific minimum number of hours required for completion; the Dental Command has the right to require ADDITIONAL hours for some or all of the required skills. The additionally assigned hours must be completed within the original 6 month period in order to successfully complete the course. Section Four: Timeline October/November Submit Application for review by 4:00PM December 1, 2014 Gather /Update Immunization Records and other required paperwork December – Interview for Program December 19th – Participants who are selected will be notified January – Start security paperwork required by Beaufort Naval Hospital February/March American Red Cross will offer a CPR/AED for those certificates that expire before class starts Complete American Red Cross Volunteer Orientation (special session may be held) April/May - Third hepatitis immunization completed May – Classroom portion of training, 8 hours each day/ no absences, lasting two weeks June 1st - All requirements must be complete – clear background check report received, CPR certification, immunizations evaluated and signed off by Health Clinic. Chair-side training begins 24 hours per week 6 months volunteering at Dental Clinic November – All required hours must be completed and record online in Volunteer Connection to receive a Completion Certificate. Those who successfully complete the program will earn a Completion Certificate. However this program is not for “Board Certification” or “Licensure” program.
