Did you know the Pine Forest Cemetery on 16th Street was established for “slaves and free persons of color?” way back in 1860? The city has a new guide that includes interesting tidbits like this about local sites of historical significance to our African American history. The guide was published in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of Wilmington’s Historic Preservation Commission.
