Did you know, the most powerful instrument of economic mobility for low-income Americans is a college degree. If a child is born into a family in poverty, and doesn’t get a college degree, they have only a 14 percent chance of joining one of the top two income quintiles, and have a 45 percent chance of never making it out of the bottom bracket. But if they do earn a degree, their prospects change completely. Suddenly, there is a 40 percent chance that theyll make it into one of the top two quintiles — and just a 16 percent chance that they will remain in poverty.
