Did you know, the most powerful instrument of economic mobility - TopicsExpress

Did you know, the most powerful instrument of economic mobility for low-income Americans is a college degree. If a child is born into a family in poverty, and doesn’t get a college degree, they have only a 14 percent chance of joining one of the top two income quintiles, and have a 45 percent chance of never making it out of the bottom bracket. But if they do earn a degree, their prospects change completely. Suddenly, there is a 40 percent chance that theyll make it into one of the top two quintiles — and just a 16 percent chance that they will remain in poverty. This is why TSIC does the work that we do. Today, more than ever, the work of TSIC matters. Who gets to graduate? We believe every student should have the opportunity to graduate. At Take Stock we take motivated low-income and first generation students and give them the tools they need to become successful professionals and rewrite their family history. All of our students are given the ability and the sense of belonging and connections to succeed. mobile.nytimes/2014/05/18/magazine/who-gets-to-graduate.html?from=magazine
