Did you know we have the only surviving Great Blue Heron Colonies - TopicsExpress

Did you know we have the only surviving Great Blue Heron Colonies in all of Marina Del Rey as the county continues to Deforest the Marina to make way for development. Our magnificent Great Blue Herons are back building nests in the tall Pine and Eucalyptus Trees and flying across the Village to gather twigs and branches to rebuild last years nests!! The first Herons arrived in early September, claimed nests in October, mates showed up and there are busy pairs weaving their large basket sized nests. Because of all your/our volunteer hours, preparing and going before Commissions and bringing the commissioners and public eye to the tree trimming last year in December that took down unoccupied nests in MV which were clearly occupied, this year there will be no tree trimming. The pairing and nesting, courtship behavior actually started this year in October, full on in November and December. And, for this season, they are safe from tree trimming. But not from ultimate clear cutting of Mariners Village 1000 plus trees. Weve been and are continuing to ask the Coastal Commission to declare Marina Del Rey ESHA,(environmentally sensitive habitat area) which they have in their power to declare and stop the Countys steady destruction of habitat. Not only habitat for the Herons, Egrets and other birds and creatures, but for those of us that were able to have affordable housing in all those developments that now charge 2 or 3 times the rent. The county gets revenue for every transaction, every rental, every cent spent on maintenance ....and in 2011 mounted a $2 million dollar lobbying effort to convince incoming Coastal Commissioner to not declare Marina Del Rey ESHA. This is what we need to turn around this year, that would permanently protect our urban forest and habitat, rather than the 1000s of hours of volunteer time and heartache to stop the Countys steady march to turn MDR into a 100% tax rich, palm tree lined resort area, devoid of wildlife and any remaining wildness or charm. Option 1: Convince California Coastal Commission to declare MDR ESHA. Option 2: Convince State Legislature to make ESHA a law. . Option 3: Get a State Park designation for MDR. So, if you care and are passionate about protecting and preserving this last little bit of beauty and peace, please bring your talents, experience, skills and expertise forward: We need legal, artistic, writing, lobbying, speaking, educating talents and clout. Blessings, Lina
