Did you know what CPR stood for? The definition of defibrillator is a bit trickier: 3. Defibrillator: Defibrillation is a process in which an electronic device gives an electric shock to the heart. This helps re-establish normal contraction rhythms in a heart having dangerous arrhythmia or in cardiac arrest. (Definition from the American Heart Association, heart.org) A defibrillator is the device that provides defibrillation! When working properly, the electrical activity in your heart muscle causes it to contract and relax to pump blood throughout your body to keep your cells (especially those important brain cells) alive. If your heart goes into ventricular fibrillation, it stops beating properly due to chaotic electrical activity. In this situation, there is a short window of time before the electrical activity in ones heart stops completely. Cardiac arrest can happen suddenly and without warning due to underlying heart conditions. Heart attacks, choking, and other issues can also lead to cardiac arrest.
