Did you know you can grow onions like this is a 4x4 seven inch deep grow bed? You dont need a lot of space to grow a lot of pure food. No garden area, start around your house in the flower beds! Take out some the bad rose bushes that are not doing well or a shrub that is not helping anyone and is growing way too big! Southern exposure is best! But even on northern side crops that will grow are lettuce, cabbage, celery, radishes, maybe onions. Everything depends. Shade loving crops grow most anywhere except for full sun areas that get too hot. Experiment and dont get discouraged. Make sure you compost very well -- at least a 50/50 mix with your native soil. In the past I bought a bunch of onion bulbs and planted them in seven different ares to see where they grew best. Now I have my favorite spots. Also its never to late to plant onions during the growing season just find your sweet spot! I pop them in all year long.
