Did you miss the Question and Answer session with the Kilchers on Sunday, October 5th before the premiere episode of Alaska the Last Frontier? Here are all the questions that were answered (unaltered and in the wording and grammar as it was on the ATLF Facebook page): Q: Have you gotten tired of us snoopy fans yet? Would like to think that you enjoy us as much as we do you. Thank you! A: Eivin: Never in the digital world. but please respect our private homes and stay away. Q: Hows 13-21 doing? A: Otto: The cow? is 1308 he does not get along with new bull so we have to sell 1308 or??? any one want to buy him? Q: How do you can smoked salmon? Does it still make its own water in the jar? I can fresh salmon and dont add water to it. A: Eve: I only add one table spoon of oil to each jar. My smoked Salmon is a lightly smoked salmon so it is still very wet. make sure you know proper pressure canning procedure. Q: Please tell us about Atz Lee and Janes kids. A: Jane: We have two great kids 11 and 13 we choose to not have them be apart of the show. for their privacy. Q: Is Otto gonna be dancing on this season shows? What contraptions will he concoct? A: Otto: I am always dancing! Q: I know yall are busy, but do you ever stop and take a moment to enjoy the beauty of alaska, what is your favorite spot? A: Eivin: I try to appreciate our view every day. Q: What is Janes favorite fish to catch? A: Jane: Halibut!! Q: Does Eivin and Eve have a harder time doing chores now with Finlay in their lives? How do they manage? A: Eivin: my name is spelled Eivin. it takes a little more time some things we do with Findlay some things we let go of, and we also have a helper named Brian. Q: How many children does Atz and Otto have ? Will Jewel ever be on show ? A: Atz: I have 4 Kids Shane, Jewel, Atz Lee, and Nikos. Otto has 4 boys, Levi, Eivin, Torrey, and August. Q: How often to you leave the homestead and go to a city? Do you ever shop in Kenai, Soldatna, or Anchorage? A: Otto: there are many things we cant buy locally so we do make supply runs to Kenai or Anchorage. Q: How close do you guys live to each other? Are you neighbors or miles away from one another? A: Eve: about half a mile away. Q: I hope the weather is good for tonights campfire! A: Shane and Kelli: so far so good! Q: Since Alaska The Last Frontier first aired, are any of you treated differently locally, or do you feel like celebrities Or are you all feeling like just the same ole good folks as you have always been? A: jane- i feel the same! Q: Eve, do you store your carrots in dry sawdust or damp? A: Eve: in damp sawdust. if its too dry it will pull the moisture from the carrots and they will get soft. Q: what is it like raising a baby on the homestead? i see eve carry findlay alot is it jus bc he cant walk yet or the eagles or predators could get him? A: all of the above. Q: Atz Lee & Jane, When are your children going to start hunting and fishing? A: jane they already do... we want their lives to remain private.. Q: Whats for supper today in your neck of the woods? A: Eivin: fish tomorrow Fish the day after......maybe we will have..... fish. Q: Love you all....especially Otto !!! Q: Last winter was mild for you, how did your winter affect your spring and summer? A: Eivin: Alaskas weather is always hard to predict we take it as it comes. Q: For everyone What are your favorite ways to pass the time during the long winter? A: jane- i play piano and guitar, atz lee plays upright bass, harmonica, and guitar.... Q: Kilchers, I live in this rat race of Southern California and I will be moving my family to Alaska in the next couple of years for a change of lifestyle. Its 100 degrees where live today and it sucks. What advice can you give me about surviving the winter? A: Charlotte: be sure to have plenty of warm clothes. It makes all the difference when you are dressed well for the weather. Q: Earlier in the spring HOWL posted the information for individuals to go to your homestead and learn your homesteading ways. Are there any grants or assistance programs for disabled people that cant afford the flight and program costs? A: Eivin: contact HOWLalaska.org for information about this Q: who watches any of the children during hunts or fishing trips? A: jane- they are often with us and off camera or with their grandparents Q: Since Alaska The Last Frontier first aired, are any of you treated differently locally, or do you feel like celebrities Or are you all feeling like just the same ole good folks as you have always been? A: No different for us here. But getting used to more recognition in lower 48 Q: Eivin now that u have finlay and running water, do you have a bathroom in your house? A: Eivin: maybe some day. Q: I know your state is known for snow but doesnt it also get a lot of rain and even have rain forests? A: Charlotte: yes, lots of rain and rain forests! Q: Otto am fascinated with your OK belt buckle, looks like solid gold, where did you get it? A: Otto: Its my initials, I cast it myself. Q: What do you find to be the most difficult aspect of life in Alaska? A: Shane: the long winter and the short days, its hard to get things done in the dark, well most things. Darkness in winter Q: How do Eiven and Eve like being parents? Is it more work than anticipated? More babies in the future? A: Eivin: its the best thing in the world! more work but we are not afraid of more work. Q: Where did Atz Lee and Eivin meet their wives? Was it hard for them to get their wives to live in the wilderness? A: jane-i have known atz since i was 11......i grew up knowing him and thinking he was trouble! now im the one that is trouble! eivin-known eve since she was 5....she was a neighbor... shes always had a thing for me Q: Atz, we know you take care of the cattle on the range in the summer...What do you do with most of your winter time that you are away from the cattle and range ? A: Atz:Take care of my house and my wife. Ski read basketry sing Q: Atz & Bonnie will you be having a waterski rematch this season? A: Bonnie: not till next summer! Q: What do you do for fun during the winter while youre stuck indoors? A: Bonnie: knitting, quilting, reading & playing rummikub with Atz. Q: Who taught you all to play guitar? You are all very good at it. A: Atz: my older sister taught me at first, the rest is self taught. Otto: I am self taught. Q: Otto or Eivin Where or how did you accumulate get all of your machinery? I mean not specifically, but it is hard to live where u do w/out those things but I know not everyone has access to things like that, how would ur lifestyle b hampered if u didnt have ur machinery? A: Eivin: I had my excavator shipped up from the seattle area. but my dad has acquired his machinery from neighbors. retired stuff from the north slope and where ever it is a really good deal. Q: I have a question for Eve... Now that you are a Mom To Findlay; how do you have time for all the work you did before; do you have some help with your garden and animals now? A: Eve: I have a farm hand who helps me but I only get about half the work done that I used to. Q: Whats the oldest food item you have eaten? A: Atz & Otto: one of our Dads endlessly repurposed soups! Q: If you do have a life threatening emergency, how would you get help? A: Eivin: From each other first. that to a hospital there is one about 12 miles away. Q: What breeds of cattle do you use and how do you market youngstock? A: Otto: Alaska Mix-short horn, beefalo, highlander and a little moose. Q: Do you ever have to go to town for supplies or groceries? How far would it be? A: Eivin: things that we cant make, grow or hunt we do buy from town. there are stores about 11 miles away. we can also order things. Atz: there is always things that pioneers and homesteaders have to buy Q: Do you home school your children? A: Otto: i figure raising children on a homestead is an education all of its own. there a some wonderful public schools here that our kids have gone to. Q: On Yukon Men they are now restricted in salmon fishing. I am geographically impaired so I dont know their proximity to your homesteads. Are you also under the same restrictions? How badly has it hampered you if it is the same? I LOVE ALASKA! A: Eivin: We follow the rules set be Alaska department of Fish and Game. while the rules can be stringent they are very important for managing the amazing resource of fish we have. if the fish were over fished we would not have fish. Q: Charlotte - It is hard when the men folk are away, herding the cattle and ;so on. Do you try to make a list of things that needs done in order of importance or just take things as them come ? A: Charlotte: I have a homestead spa day, ha ha Q: Does the camera crew help with chores when theyre not busy filming? A: Eivin: that would be a spoiler stay tuned!! Q: Do you ever have days where you have hardly anything to do? A: Eivin: Never. Q: What was the funniest thing to happen during the filming of this seasons show ? A: Eivin: That would be a spoiler Keep watching!! Q: How do you raise chickens during the cold winters and what do you feed them? A: sprouted barley, ground meat scraps, chicken food Q: Do you guys have your freezers stocked with fish and meat already for the winter? A: Eivin: We have lots all saved up but are still adding more now. Q: How is the yak doing that Finlay was given? A: Otto: he is doing fantastic he has two younger yak friends now Q: Where did the boys go to school? A: Eivin: there is a great Public school Mcneil Canyon just a few miles up the road. Q: Congratulations again on the Emmy nomination! Who was tasked with taking care of the homestead while you were in Los Angeles? A: Otto: we have a great ranch foreman named Jason! Jane- I do have a garden and Im home a lot... I just rather be out fishing! Our kids fish as well
