Did you play an instrument in grammar school? Ive always been interested in music, many kinds of music. So in 4th grade at Bowers, Mrs. McKinneys class, I decided to sign up for Band with Mr. Johns. Looking through the options, I wanted the most unusual instrument available. And I found one - Bassoon. At over 4.2 feet in length and 7.5 pounds, it was a monster. My right hand couldnt even make the spread over the lower keys. The double reed mouth piece needed to first soak in warm water for at least 30 minutes and even then was almost impossible for a 4th grader to play. The best way to cure a kid of his love of music is enforce it on him. So in pure 1960s parenting style, I had to practice for 30 minutes after dinner, which was an hour including soaking the reed, to get my parents to sign my practice card. If not, I was in for some variety of punishment or scolding. Its a wonder I wound up making my living in music. I still fondly remember sitting at the dining room table after dinner, listening to my friends playing in the street while I accomplished little more than a performance of the sound of a half dead duck being run over by a honking semi tractor trailer.
