#DidYouKnow that between 1930-1932, Ben Uri was based in the East End of London at the Jews Temporary Shelter? This week’s blog tells the story of the Shelter, originally known as the Poor Jews Temporary Shelter, which was founded in 1885 to provide a refuge for the homeless, jobless and poor people who arrived in England from overseas. According to the records held at London Metropolitan Archives, it helped 11,000 migrants in 1910. Ben Uri’s Chairman (1926-1944), Adolph Michaelson, was also the superintendent of the Shelter, which is why it was the location for Ben Uri’s committee meetings and its gallery after the Shelter rebuilt its premises in 1930. Did anyone in your family history ever stayed at the Shelter? Why not examine your family tree and find out? We would love to hear your stories! #BenUri100 #Archives #London #History
