Didnt know that Chileans sang La Internacional/The Internationale during Pablo Nerudas funeral. BRAVO! Quite a feat, considering that it was during the first weeks of Augusto Pinochets coup detat against Nerudas close friend (and fellow communist/Marxist) Salvador Allende, the worlds first democratically-elected Marxist president. Pinochet could have ordered the machine-gunning of these brave people but of course, that would have precipitated international outcry against his fascist rule, so, Pinochet and his men did nothing to stop thousands of Chileans to sing La Internacional during Nerudas funeral. It is said Pablo Neruda was so sad upon hearing that his friend committed suicide or was killed during the coup detat, and that the democratically-elected Marxist administration is no more. But, still others say Neruda was actually in good health (though hospitalized) during that time, but some sort of an imperialist agent injected something to his dextrose, and the rest is history. His health took a turn for the worse. It would be years hence before the Chilean people would start walking free in the liberated avenues of Santiago and other cities of Nerudas homeland, years of struggle before Pinochets tyranny ended.
