Difference between distancing yourself from family that takes you away from Allah (s.w.t) and cutting ties with them. If your mother, father, brothers, sisters, etc; take you away from Allah (s.w.t) you are allowed to do what is necessary to keep worshiping Allah (s.w.t). If that means living in a separate home, staying with another family, etc. We are taught to exchange good words with bad intentions. So distancing yourself from their mischief is allowed. But cutting the ties with kinship. This means never calling, emailing, etc. Not communicating with them. This is not allowed. Rather it is a grave sin. Hope this helps people with figuring out what to do with family. In conclusion, separate yourself by distance on land but still communicate with them. Worshiping Allah (s.w.t) comes first but that doesnt mean you dont speak with family. Does this make sense?
