Often we hear certain therapists promoting social skills training from one to one sessions but fail to explain to families why the child is unable to socialise in different settings. In addition, some will video record their sessions to justify the training sessions, usually for marketing purposes. There is a difference between social skills and social competencies. Social skills are the tools often provided by the child and in many cases need support through various teaching methods in different environments. These skills may be as simple as smiling in acknowledgement to complex verbal conversations. Often some therapists try too hard to produce verbal visual interactions yet forgetting that every child socialise differently. Social skills differ from child to child, thus we need to understand before drilling sessions. Social competencies are the measures of society, including different groups of interest. Social competency is the acceptance of how a child socialise and what level of sophistication is presented. This belongs to society and differs vastly because of different agenda. How our children is accepted is different from what social skills they exhibit while appropriate social skills may improve social acceptance. Know the difference between them before hurried off to endless drill sessions and therapies so that your child transition is more beneficial in the long run.
