Different Christian views on Creation THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE Did you know that within Christian Thought there are at least 4 different views on Creation? YOUNG EARTH CREATIONIST (YEC): This group believes the story of Genesis is exact and the 7 days were 24hour days in which God created the earth. They explain the age of the universe via genealogies in the bible and believe the universe is less than 10,000 years old. They believe that if there is any kind of evolution, it is Microevolution which means basically between species of animal like a wild bird might evolve into a different wild bird but there is NO belief in Macroevolution which is the idea that all of mankind evolved from one common ancestor. They believe that Adam and Eve are the first humans and all humans descend from them. OLD EARTH CREATIONIST (OEC): This group leaves room for the earth to be billions of years old by honoring God as Creator but believe that each day could have been much longer than a 24 hour day, even possibly each day of creation could have been millions of years. Within the group of Old Earth Creationist there are different versions or ideas labeled as Gap Creationism, Progressive Creationism and Day Age Creationism. They believe in micro evolution but do not believe in macro evolution as they believe that Adam and Eve are the first humans. EVOLUTIONARY CREATIONISM (EC): This group believes just as OEC and YEC that God created and sustains the universe. The biology of chemical and electrical reactions within the systems and structures are held together by God. God works through the laws of nature he created but he also can intervene in miraculous ways. “This view does believes that God created all living things through a common ancestor, through the process of evolution” (The author of life, 2014). The universe is in fact billions of years old according to this view. Intelligent Design (ID): This group holds to the idea that the creative design of man and the structures and systems in our universe are far too complex to be explained through the evolution process. Only a Creator could design such sophistication and complexity. Thus, rather than believing in a common ancestor or macroevolution they believe in a Common Designer or Creator as the explanation for similarity in living things. The earth for some ID is billions of years old and for some who believe in ID the earth is closer to the Creation timing based on the genealogies. Hayashi, J & Sweeney D.
