Difficult to fully describe how central this house is to Modernism. A laboratory for new technology, form, and space, far beyond what any Case Study house attempted. A creative collaboration between a great architect and a great client; Ken Reiner was the quintessential Southern California inventor/entrepreneur with a vision far beyond mere profit (his is a dramatic and classically tragic story worth a film.) How many architects were inspired by this house over the years? Im one. Praise to the Burchills for rescuing it, completing it with Lautner, and being good stewards for this house for forty years. N.B.: Curbed LA does a much better job reporting this house than the Wall Street Journal, which focuses on the gee-whiz instead of the real story; like any true genius, Lautner still suffers from being misunderstood.
