Dinner time in Bulgaria is a whole different ball game - always - TopicsExpress

Dinner time in Bulgaria is a whole different ball game - always beginning with salad - giant organic tomatoes and cucumber topped with crumbled soft feta. We sit with our Bg family and start about 5.30pm slowly eating the salad, small marinated fish, caviar dip, corn and fresh crusty bread, then eventually the main meal arrives - pork slow cooked with beer, fried carrots, onion and garlic and special Bulgarian herbs - delish! The people here sip slowly on a glass of local brandy (rakia) - I attempt to drink this fire water and understand why they take their time - then out comes the cherries, berries, chocolate, blue cheese, more feta and anything else they can find to stuff our bellies with. By 11 pm we are still grazing and chatting as a new guest arrives and dinner starts all over again with a big cheers - its custom here that anyone who cheers immediately everyone stops what their doing to join in. The round of glass clinking and looking into each and everyones eyes with a large heartfelt nostroyavey is a time consuming passion of theirs. Thank goodness there was only 6 of us and not 16 as it can end up being a very long night.
