Ravichandran under his production company, Aascar Films. The film was scripted and directed by Shankar and features Vikram and Amy Jackson leading an ensemble cast which include Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel, Santhanam and Ramkumar Ganesan portraying pivotal roles. The soundtrack album and background score was composed by A. R. Rahman. Production design was handled by T. Muthuraj. P. C. Sreeram was the films cinematographer and editing was done by Anthony . The visual effects are designed by V. Srinivas Mohan through Rising Sun Pictures. Weta Workshop had worked on the digital and prosthetic make-up and background arts for the film. The dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi are also titled I.[7][8] The film was made on a budget under 1 billion (US$16 million).[1][4] Principal photography commenced on 15 July 2012. The filming lasted for two years and eight months, during which shooting was done extensively in China.[9] Further schedules were filmed in locations in Chennai, Bangkok, Jodhpur, Kodaikanal, Pollachi, Bangalore and Mysore. Rajani Shankar made potential discussions with Richard Taylor (pictured) for special effect and designing props for I. Development Director Shankar collaborated with writers Suresh and Balakrishnan, to work on the script of his next film.[10] Music director A. R. Rahman was signed in to compose the soundtrack album and background score for the film, collaborating with Shankar for the tenth time.[b] P. C. Sreeram was confirmed to do the films cinematography, collaborating with Shankar for the first time.[11] Action choreographer Peter Hein had to back out of the project due to commitments with S. S. Rajamoulis film Baahubali (2015).[12] As a result, Martial arts choereographer Yuen Woo-ping was selected for handling the stunt sequences.[13] Additional stunt direction and supervision was done by Anl Arasu.[13] VFX company Rising Sun Pictures under visual effects designer V. Srinivas Mohan was selected to provide the special effects in motion filming. Indian film production designer T. Muthuraj was confirmed as the films art director.[14] In May 2012, Shankar visited New Zealand and met filmmaker Peter Jackson and Richard Taylors special effects and prop company Weta Workshop.[15] Sean Foot and Davina Lamont provided the prosthetic makeup for Vikrams beast get-up in the film and additional prosthetic makeup was done by Christien Tinsley and Dominie Till.[16] The film was earlier reported to be titled as either Thendral or Therdal, but it was later confirmed that the project would be titled I.[17][18] Gavin Miguel and Mary E. Vogt were in charge of the costume designing of the films cast.[19] Accoridng to Shankar, Azhagan and Aanazhagan were the alternate titles that were kept in mind, but since they were already used, he decided that a single alphabet would be the films title. Since I also meant beauty and explained the character of the protagonist, the alphabet was finalised to be the films title.[20] Casting In April 2012, Vikram was selected to feature in the lead role.[21] Asin, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra were reported to be in contention for the female lead.[22][23] Padukone denied her involvement in the film.[23] Samantha Ruth Prabhu was then signed on, but was forced to opt out citing date issues as the reason.[24]
