Directional antennas are meh The Rio hotel has been mocking me - TopicsExpress

Directional antennas are meh The Rio hotel has been mocking me all week for my lack of foresight in bringing a directional antenna. Its 0.65 miles away in direct line-of-sight from my hotel room (at the Vdara), as seen in the picture. In theory, with the right antenna pointed at the Rio, I should be able to pick up the DEF CON convention network. Luckily there is the vendor area at the convention area. I greedily picked up an antenna for $55 and tried it out. The results were disappointing. While it appears that Im getting signal strength increases as predicted by the 15dbi signal gain, thats not translating into seeing more access-points. I still have difficulty getting to access-points across the street, much less all the way from the Vdara to the Rio. This setup should work if both sides have both the directional antennas and amplifiers. That little Alfa WiFi device you see in the picture has a 2watt amplifier, so I can transmit packets all the way to the Rio. Its just that I cant receive anything unless they amplify the signal they send me. tiny.cc/v99ckx
