Director General, National Mathematics Centre Prof Adewale Solarin has said Nigeria hopes to break the world record in Mathematics and Rubik’s cube puzzle this year. Briefing newsmen in Abuja yesterday on the 8th Pan African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM) and 22nd Pan African Mathematics Olymiad (PAMO) to be hosted by Nigeria this year, he said it is time to prove to the world that Nigerians can solve the Rubik’s cube and excel in it. He said, “[The] Rubik cube is designed to develop the mind of the pupils. Its algorithm is more complicated than other form of mathematics. “If you can solve it, you can solve any other form of mathematics.” The PAMO event which commences next month will host 20 countries coming with four contestants and at least one lady among the contestants. According to him, the PAMO event will witness the crowning of the mathematics queen by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan among other activities hence the crowning is to encourage ladies to participate in mathematics activities. Solarin said the aim of the congress of mathematicians is to bring mathematicians together and brainstorm on how mathematics can be used to solve world problems.
