Directors have no control over the release of their films. My - TopicsExpress

Directors have no control over the release of their films. My Byomkesh and Sandip Rays Feluda is apparantly releasing on the same date; 19th November. Personally I have no issues. I believe the Bengali audience will go for both, because they love both the sleuths. This my third Byomkesh which ran into severe problems last year. Firstly because Abir Chatterjee decided to walk off and become Feluda. Its his choice as an actor. I had to accept it and did it with grace. I do not blame him at all. Had to live with the ache, go for another search for my new Byomkesh since I have long bought the rights of four more stories. Then my producer ran into financial crises. Many advised to sell the project off to someone else. I hang on, borrowed, finished the project and waited for him to recover and return. I rarely lose trust easily so trusted and believed in him. Now he is back. Byomkesh has been a very adventurous and controversial journey in my career. Despite the rough road, I enjoy this journey because it is never easy to handle a classic or a master of the status of Saradindu Bandopadhay. Its very difficult to find budget in Bengali to do a period piece and that too without huge stars. But I still went ahead with Adim Ripu as a period piece because I do not have the balls, neither the gall to change a dhoti clad, married middle class Bengali with a brilliant mind and truth seeker into a jeans clad new age private dick. The charm of the old world Cal and its inherent complexities is part of the plotline. Now like Sherlock or Shakepeare, if Byomkesh would have been filmed numerous times through the ages, one should modernize. Unfortunately, until recently we just hand one two Bengali films made before mine. So I chose to stick to the original and fought my budget constraints and somehow managed. Those who feel the lack of extravaganza should realize that Byomkesh is not extravaganza. Read up. Get their homework correct. Simly because I have to make one film after another I could not go back and forth in time. So I have stuck to the 60s. First one was set against the backdrop of 62 riots. Second in 64. Now its 69. There is reference to local political turmoil in Benishanghar. So actually a lot of research goes into creating a classic. Not necessarily research on just decor but the political. But I sincerely hope all will enjoy both Feluda and Byomkesh. I personally did not like any one else apart from Soumitra Chatterjee as Feluda, but the audience saw the later ones, loved them. So, what the hell. Lets all have fun.
