Spud Allen set out to the early lead, with Chance Crum, Austin Sheridan and Brock Lemley all in hot pursuit. A caution would stack the field up for a restart on lap six, and Allen went low as he had been for the first few laps of the main. Sheridan, who’d worked past Crum for second at that time, had a monster restart and flew around the high side of the speedway in turns one and two, pulling even with Allen by center corner and nosing ahead by the start of the back stretch. At the line, Sheridan had taken the lead and began to establish his advantage while riding the ragged edge of the cushion around the track. His half straightaway lead held till around lap 12 when Crum, who’d passed Allen and was holding off a stout challenge from Lemley, found extra speed on the low side of the track. Chance erased Austin’s advantage in clean air and showed a wheel to him off the bottom of four around lap 17. From there, the two engaged in what was reminiscent of a heavyweight boxing championship match as they battled for the lead. Like Ali and Frazier, they went toe to toe with Crum rolling the bottom and Sheridan holding serve on the cushion as the moisture drained away from both grooves. With the white flag flying, Crum and Sheridan were dead even running through turn two. Sheridan found just a smidge more forward bite off the top through the middle of three, and used it to slingshot himself forward for the narrow win. Crum would settle for a hard. Lemley would dice and slice with Dustin O’Brien and Robbie Price before securing the third spot. He was also fast time and won his heat. Other heat winners were Sheridan and Nate Vaughn.
