‘Disables must do something for society’ - SLUDI President By Melvin Tejan Mansaray Kabba Franklyn Bangura President of Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issues (SLUDI), in an interview with this press, urged Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s) to get up and do something like learning a trade or skill so that they would be able to do something for themselves and the country as a whole. He said PWDs are human beings and must be thoughtful like any other human being regardless of their status. The SLUDI President expressed his happiness over the way the government is factoring issues of young people particularly Persons With Disabilities (PWS’s) into programs, policies and initiatives. He cited the proposed Youth Village, Graduate Internship Program; YEP etc which he said would be of immense benefit to PWDs as well. He explained that at the moment, SLUDI is preparing PWD’s to benefit from government and other programs by establishing partnership and a national network of PWDs in all parts of the country. This, he stressed, is very important so as to get the PWDs enrolled into the programs because training in various skills and other capacity building programmes is what should be desired by the many unskilled and unemployed PWDs who every now and then are seen on the streets begging for a living, Mr. Kabba said. He also called on PWDs to come forward and grab the opportunities that are being provided by the government, UNDP and other partners; because that is what will help PWDs forge ahead with their lives.
