Disappointed... great cast and performances guided beautifully by Paul Thomas Anderson, who is one of my favorites... the dialogue was solid... but nothing much happens... and thats fine, theres plenty of great movies where not a lot happens. This isnt one of them. Theres no life to the situations. We dont care about the characters or at least I didnt. The setting was beautifully captured but didnt feel alive. The movie didnt get interesting until about 2 hrs in and then it floundered for another half hour before ending. There was an expectation going in of it being something between Chinatown and The Big Lebowski directed by Boogie Nights Paul Thomas Anderson... instead it was That Seventies Show directed by The Master (which I liked but didnt fit here) Paul Thomas Anderson trying to make a David Fincher film.
