Disappointing news was received today. We have been lobbying the University of Lethbridge to permit us to run a competition to design and register an official tartan in the universities name. The design was to be created by students and chosen by a select panel of representatives from the bookstore, student body, and board of governors. Despite kindly being gifted the registration fee by Brian and the kind people at the Scottish Tartan Authority, and despite organising the weaving of the bolt for a good price here in Canada, and despite organising the use of the STA own croft-weaver online tartan design facility, the president of the university has decided not to go ahead with this exciting opportunity. No explanation has been offered - though I imagine that the request for funds to cover the cost of weaving the bolt may have played a part. We are all very disappointed, and had hoped, as part of this opportunity, to increase awareness of male-specific cancers throughout the university student body, as well as increasing cultural identity and presenting an historical overview of Scotland, tartan, and the wearing of the tartan. Feel free to e-mail the president, Dr. Mike Mahon, at the university if you have strong feelings about this decision.
