Disappointing to see Emer Costello lose her seat in the European Elections. Emer was one of two Irish MEPs (the other being Nessa Childers) who was awarded a 100% rating by equality groups for her voting record on LGBT issues - one of her priority areas, along with promoting justice and human rights for Palestinians in the occupied territories. I hope her successors in Dublin - who have all pledged support for LGBT equality - will strive to achieve the same outcome in this area. Elsewhere in Europe, we have witnessed the disturbing rise of far-right, xenophobic parties in these elections - parties that finished first in the UK and France. And while Angela Merkel may bask in her own victory in Germany, she would do well to reflect on how her approach to the Euro and banking crisis has directly benefited these extremist movements and undermined support for the European project. My thoughts this Monday morning.
