Discipleship Series; 25 August, 2013 (NKJV) Luke 11:2, So He said to them, "When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven,… It is amazing and instructive the way Christ wants us to begin our prayers; He said to “SAY.” I have heard several teachings saying, “The louder your voice, the more likely God will hear and respond to your prayer.” Beloved, you do not need to shout for God to hear your voice; He even hears the thoughts of your heart. Psalm 139:2, You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. How many of us ‘shout’ at our fathers when we ask them for things – we only need to shout if they (our fathers) are far from us! “Our Father in heaven” – God is our Father. The word ‘father’ has ‘SOURCE’ as part of its root meanings. A father is not just a male, which is a symbol of strength and protection, but also of leadership, guidance, guardian and defence. So, when Jesus Christ taught His disciples to pray, He was in effect telling the disciples that God is just their Source, but also everything that a father represents and symbolises. It will help us to think and look at ‘real’ fathers we know (may be ours or others’), and we will appreciate the way Jesus expects us to start our prayers. A primary thing we should look out for in our prayer is the attitude we adopt when approaching God. No matter what we may have done, no matter what may be happening or may have happened to us – our Father will always have our best interests at heart and in matters. Luke 11:11 – 13, If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! Natural fathers seek and want to please their children, how much more the heavenly Father? ‘When push turns to shove’, natural fathers will look after their own interest, but our heavenly Father will always look out for our best interests, always! Prayer: My Father in heaven, please give ear to my prayers, in Jesus’ name. Visit this link to see past articles; groups.yahoo/group/discipleshipseries/
