Disciplined play rewards Beast Calvin Abueva with first Player of Week award this season From: Richard Dy November 3, 2014, 05:07 pm IT seems a restrained beast can still put up monster numbers. Alaska has opened the season with three straight wins and hold a share of the lead in the PBA Philippine Cup, and a lot of it has to do with a Calvin Abueva’s more focused approach to the game, according to the Aces’ first assistant coach Louie Alas. “Siguro dahil na-lessen na rin niya yung pagiging reckless niya sa court. Tingin ko mas nagko-concentrate na siya sa game,” noted Alas of the player nicknamed The Beast. Unlike last season when Abueva has the tendency to get involved in on-court physicality and off-the-court distractions, this time the athletic Alaska small forward is playing within the system. The 6-foot-1 Abueva’s inspired plays have injected life and energy to an Aces squad that is aiming for no less than a PBA championship this season under new coach Alex Compton. Abueva last week came up with game-highs of 26 points and 22 rebounds, including the game-winning floater to lead Alaska to a come-from-behind 100-98 victory over Talk ’N Text. Three days later, he compiled 10 points, two rebounds and a steal in just 10 minutes, helping the Aces to a 105-64 plastering of the Meralco Bolts. “Ganun lang talaga siya ka-intense kasi gusto niya lagi sa lahat ng 50-50 balls nakakasama siya,” noted Alas, in praising Abueva, who was also the hands-down choice for the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period of October 27 to November 2. The 51-year-old Alas explained that the 2012 PBA Rookie of the Year’s energetic approach to the game is a reflection of what he does in practice. “Si Calvin naman kasi grabe ang concentration. Pati sa practice ganun yung energy niya, although sa coaching standpoint, gusto namin yung ganun,” he added. Alaska is currently preparing for its keenly-awaited collision with co-leader San Miguel in a battle of unbeaten teams on Wednesday. “Acid test ang San Miguel para sa amin, especially at may June Mar Fajardo sila,” said Alas. - LA
