Disclaimer: I hope someone will share this as advice to the Class of 2018 Fb page because I dont want to post it under my real profile and jeopardize my employment or slander UCR. First year students, do NOT buy textbooks at the bookstore. Its a waste of money in most cases. Books can be rented from the library reserves (library.ucr.edu/view/services/reserves) for 2 hours at a time with your ID. FOR FREE. I love the reserves because it forces me to be at the library and study at no cost. If you reeeally want a book to take home, find it online. Or, find the older editions of the book and buy them. The difference between the 8th edition and the 9th is probably the price tag and a few offset pages. You can also buy books, share them, and split the cost with classmates. Be aware that you need to match up with people who are trustworthy not only in giving you the money for the book but who are also not stingy or forgetful when its your turn. Other options include renting the book online from Amazon or Chegg or somewhere else, or to find it in the pdf version to take it with you to class and highlight it on your electronic device. And last, but not least, you might not even need the book at all. A lot of professors sum things up in powerpoint lectures or dont even reference the books at all. CHECK THE SYLLABUS. Tl:dr dont buy books at the UCR bookstore.
