Disclaimer: Rant and venting about to happen. I have been in the fitness industry for the better part of 15 years. The main reason that I got into it was my background in sports growing us as well as I was 50lbs overweight and needed to lose weight. The one thing I noticed early on that there are a lot of people/companies focused on gimmicks that puts profits ahead of progress. I made a decision early on that I would learn from those who I thought were in it for the right reasons and shut out those that were not. Enter in social media. It is virtually impossible to separate out those who have the next greatest thing with the hopes of convincing you of buying one of their books or products from those that actually have something to contribute. After a while I started to learn some of the inside tricks of the industry such as releasing a DVD series (not mentioning any brands) on a 16 to 24 week marketing schedule not to help people but to maximize profits. It is really hard to not get discouraged when your voice get drown out by the millions of people who are only in it for self promotion, profit, or selfish gain.(To the fitness professionals: STOP TAKING SELFIES) Long dead are the days of coaching and caring for individuals as a top priority, enter in making profits above all else. The sad thing is that the general public trusts what they read and see. The traditional fitness centers have been lying to people for years. A promise of a deal during peoples most vulnerable time of year, the holidays, of cheap monthly dues for a place they they feel guilty going to and 80% stop going after the 1st month. We are supposed to be taking care of peoples health and we are doing the opposite and lining our pockets at the same time. Do yourself this favor for 2015: -Shoot your TV, it is your number 1 source of anxiety and your biggest time killer -Take a walk with your family everyday for at least 30min. Even if there is snow, it will make it more fun -Find a hobby that gets you outdoors, SUP, swimming, hunting, basketweaving, I dont care just get outside -Dont trust and ignore any fitness professional that tells you anything other than: hardwork, dedication, eating clean and movement are the ONLY ways to achieve your goals. To some up my point, I am going to let the good people at Uproxx throw one of the biggest fitness chains under the bus. Thanks for listening. uproxx/webculture/2014/12/how-low-cost-gyms-like-planet-fitness-psychologically-manipulate-people-into-not-going-to-the-gym/
