Discover Punjabs Greatest Untold Story : How Punjab changed the outcome of WW1. 100 years ago in November 1914 Punjabs soldiers, came to the rescue of a devastated British force and thwarted a strategic German advance on the Port of Calais ; the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was on the verge of collapse and was set to square off against a force 10 times its size. With the fate of the ports and the BEF in their hands, the Indian Corps would not falter. Punjabi soldiers stood stoic in the face of a mighty German advance - halting Germanys last chance to win the war early. The Kaiser had commanded his troops to “take Calais at all costs”, which was the lifeline to Britain. New British and Canadian soldiers were being trained as quickly as possible, but if Calais fell, it would be difficult or impossible for them to join the fight in France. The Indian Corps arrived just in time to shore up the BEF, and held over 1/3 of the British line which was the last defence before Calais. According to leading military historian and former Ghurkha officer Gordon Corrigan, that although the history has been somewhat lost it was certainly true that they ( The Indian Corps) had saved the BEF.
