Discovery: Discovered by: Swedish Chemist - Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1772) English Chemist - Joseph Priestly (1774) French Chemist - Antoine Lavoisier (1775) There was a dispute over who really discovered Oxygen. 1772: Scheele discovered that a red hot Manganese oxide produced a gas (fire gas). He considered this as the phlogiston theory. Sparks were produced when it came in contact with hot charcoal dust. He repeated the experiment by heating Potassium Nitrate, Mercury oxide and etc. The same gas was produced during the experiment. 1774: Priestly repeated Scheeles experiment. Used a reddish mercuric oxide in an inverted container. He also did the mouse jar experiment and candle jar experiment whcih shows that there is the need of the presence of a gas ( Oxygen ).
