Diseases are outbreaking all over the globe! A race to save humanity is underway in the thrilling cooperative game of Pandemic by Z-Man Games. Can you and the other first responders save the humanity from annihilation? Pandemic starts with all players taking on the role of a first responder at the CDC in Atlanta. From there, they must move quickly around the globe treating infections and researching cures. There are four different types of disease; each must be cured and eradicated from the board before the players can win. Beware, however, because at any time, the infections can “outbreak” and spread out of control. When the game starts, all players choose a character role. Roles include such characters as the Quarantine Specialist who prevents infections from occurring in the city they are in and all linked cities; the Researcher who can give any city card to another player as long as they are in the same city; and many more. Once all roles are chosen, players move to Atlanta where they start at the CDC. From there, typically many groups will spread out to all the different parts of the world and start researching disease cures. Many times they will build a Research Center on the other side of the world from Atlanta for faster eradication of diseases; Research Centers are the only place where you can make a cure for a color of disease. At the end of each players turn, the player will draw a card. These cards can be anything from something helpful like an Airlift allowing players to move between cities quicker to something bad like an Epidemic which increases the infection rate, infects new cities, and intensifies the infections by taking all the cards from the city discard and placing them on top of the deck, ensuring that they will be drawn again soon. Working as a team is the only way to win in this game. With each game lasting around 45 minutes, Pandemic is certainly designed as a difficult game for players to win, but this only makes it more satisfying when you defeat it! The game plays with 2-4 players and brings nervous anticipation and excitement from the first turn to the last. You and the other players will have quite the task if you want to save the world before the “pandemic” overtakes the world. For those who enjoy the original game, Z-Man Games sells several expansions, adding further difficulty and diversity.
