Diseases like ALS actually generate revenue - for medicine manufacturing companies, for nursing homes, for home health aides and accessorial functions (equipments needed for everyday function). Presently, an average of 0.00010% of the population suffer from ALS. Whether we accept it or not, we are weighed as a product in the economies of scale, and when weighed as such, it does not make any economic feasibility to find a cure for ALS. Also, when they do, what about the existence of ALS Foundation itself? Even though it may exist, it may not be needed any more as it is being touted now. So, whose interest is it anyway to find a cure for ALS? Another thing to consider is the momentum ALS is getting. Over 90% of ALS-affected people are Caucasians. About 6,000 people are diagnosed with ALS every year, and in USA, at any given time, there are about 30-35,000 suffering from it. Thats a lot of people suffering from this horrible disease, my heart goes out to them and even more so for their families. However, more people die in Africa of hunger and thirst every week than those who die of ALS every year. More people die on our streets due to drunk driving - EVERY DAY - than a person dies of ALS every year. More people commit suicide every week, because they do not have a support system, than those who die of ALS every year. I am all for finding a cure for ALS, and for a sincere attempt in that regard. However, throwing a bucket of ice over your head and challenging others is not going to help. Use that water to quench someones thirst or water a tree. Donate the money, but more so donate your time, if you can. I am personally looking for a nursing home where I can volunteer to spend time with an elderly who has no visitors. Plant a tree, it will make the world better for those you leave behind. Smile, it will make someone who is depressed a reason to hope. Give, it will motivate someone to pass on the blessing. Feed, it will give someone the energy to be the change you inspire. Above all, Love, it will give someone the realization that they do not just exist but that they matter. Find a cure for ALS, yes! Find a cure for inhumanity, heck yeah!
