Disproportionality becomes a domestic political tool in Sweden?! ================================================== It has been deeply disappointing - but not surprising – to note the repeated demands made by Urban Ahlin and Jonas Sjöstedt on behalf of their respective parties, to define Israel´s defensive actions as disproportionate. Israel started with no fire at all, in response to unceasing and relentless, completely unprovoked rocket attacks from the Gaza strip aimed at Israel´s civilians. Moving on to very gradual and intermittent, cautious and restrained defense actions after suffering years of attacks, Israel was met only by an increased barrage of rockets from Hamas. It is simply absurd to talk about disproportionality, when no Israeli measures, so far, have been sufficient to stop the fire. To the contrary, it has been intensified. How can the current response to years of unceasing, unprovoked attacks against Israel´s civilians be disproportionate when the fire does not stop, no matter what? Israel´s restraint and the humanitarian precautions which limit its military options, are such as no army in the history of warfare has shown. Watching the personal tragedies resulting from the conflict certainly affects the Israelis before anyone else in the world. Such tragedies, however, are in the very nature of warfare. It is very much to be regretted that so little understanding is shown for the millions of Israelis who have had to live their lives in the shadow of the terror. This is why every effort must now be made to solve this problem and put an end to the terror, so that civilians on both sides can be spared the suffering of constantly renewed rounds of violence. The demands made by Ahlin and Sjöstedt would simply leave Israel no way to defend itself and as proven above - have no foundation in Reality. Disproportional is the constant fire of Hamas against only and solely civilians, and the dragging of the Gazans into violence they can stop at any moment by ceasing their fire. And still they do not. Israel will continue to protect its citizens, with the one purpose of this operation from the very beginning - to stop the total indiscriminate fire from Gaza. It is impossible to shake off the impression that these demands - from both parties - in Sweden- are designed to cater to the hearts – but unfortunately not the minds – of all too large segments of their parties who have been fed with very negative and one-sided views of Israel, in the media and the political debate. I certainly hope that Urban Ahlin and Jonas Sjöstedt and their parties -will not have to face anything similar to the cruel dilemmas imposed upon Israel, but if they would, I have no doubt that they would be forced to act not so differently in order to protect the Swedes against brutal terrorism that has never been, and will never be - due to its nature to any dialogue.
