Diss A v Saxlingham A (Norfolk Cricket Alliance Division 6) DATE: SATURDAY 8TH JUNE 2013 VENUE: RECTORY MEADOW, DISS 1ST INNS: DISS A 72 (22.5 OVERS) 2ND INNS: SAXLINGHAM A 73-2 (23 OVERS) SAXLINGHAM A WON BY 8 WICKETS Despite boasting their strongest XI of the season, Diss A’s run of ghastly form continued with an eight-wicket loss at home to Saxlingham A at Rectory Meadow on Saturday. Club legends Danny Tebble, Will Dawson and Ben Green attracted a considerable crowd to the game but their efforts were in vain as Diss were well beaten in what should have been a hard-fought contest between two evenly-matched sides. Having lost the toss and been put into bat, Diss’ leadng run-scorer Dan Williman was joined by Lewis Brawn, promoted up the order after some solid displays with the willow in hand. Together the pair tucked into some buffet bowling, reaching 38-0 from 7 overs. This looked a decent platform for the experienced middle order to build on and despite Brawn (22) losing his wicket, the signs were good. However, the visitors’ decision to bring C. Neave into the attack turned the game on its head and two successive maidens out of nowhere cranked up the pressure on the Diss batsmen. Williman (22) followed soon after, holing out, before Neave picked up the key scalps of Dawson (9) and Tebble (13). From a healthy position of 56-1, it became a procession of batsmen sent back to the hutch through a mixture of an unpredictable wicket and some very tame dismissals, and Diss were bowled out cheaply for 72, having used only half of the allotted overs. Neave was the chief destroyer for Saxlingham with 6-17, during which time he was unfortunate not to claim a hat-trick, and N. Pearce chipped in with 2-3. The alarming statistic that five batsmen returned without troubling the scorers highlights the severe batting frailty that needs to be worked upon in the coming weeks. Despite the low total on the board, Diss skipper Jody Sparrow remained confident, knowing that he had one or two trump cards up his sleeve. And with the pitch allowing for plenty of turn, off-spinner Danny Tebble took the new ball along with leading wicket-taker Mahmood Riasat. Diss showed a high intensity in the field, restricting their opponents to just 7 runs from the first 8 overs. An early wicket was imperative to give Diss a sniff of a chance but the opening batsmen were resolute and began to play their shots, once confidence had grown. Saxlingham had got halfway to the target when Sparrow (1-12) struck in his first over and although Dawson (1-21) trapped M. English lbw to gain a bowling bonus point, D. English (25 not out) saw the visitors home with a six and a four off Tebble. Diss have a much-needed week off this week but will be looking to bounce back in style when they face high-flying Beccles A at Rectory Meadow on Saturday June 22nd.
