Distance runners (especially those in LA)! For years Ive been searching for cross training that I looked forward to doing. I run, run, run, run and run some more, and joked that my cross training was running on roads, running on trails, running on tracks, running on treadmills, running on grass, etc. Over the past couple Summers Ive hired a personal trainer (the badass June Caseria Johnson) to whip me into shape. Prior to that Id gone to a few different spinning classes, yoga classes, circuit training classes, ballet/bar classes, dance classes and most recently kung fu classes. Never found something I could see doing regularly for an extended period of time, not to mention I kept tweaking something and walking away from the classes injured for a week or two. Enter Lal at Orangetheory Fitness Los Angeles. They opened a studio in Brentwood (nearish the Brentwood Gardens on San Vicente) across from the Juice Crafters and Harrys Wines, and I walked in sometime in June and told Lal Id come check his class out in October (no way I was going to crosstrain doing something new and injure myself mid-Summer this past year), and when my little challenge ended in early September I had planned 4-6 weeks off. So in late October I visited Lal and had a blast. Went back and discovered my other favorite instructor: Whitney. I now go to this class 2-3 times a week, and every other week (or every 3rd week) train with June again. Ive never felt stronger (total body strong, core, back, shoulders, etc.) in my life. In case youre looking for something fun, dynamic and exciting in the group fitness realm, Orange Theory is HR training that bounces between Zone 3 & Zone 4, but you can target any HR zone thats right for you in your present phase of training, your HR is on a huge monitor in front of you. You generally do half the class on a treadmill (intervals or hill repeat sets) and the other half happens on the strength floor and utilizes free weights, TRX bands, bozu balls, and other strength props, and bounces back and forth between strength and a rowing machine. All the while they pump in some energetic music (Friday nights they have a DJ spinning) and you have an uplifting coach/instructor guiding what youre doing. Im going again on Friday night 4:15-5:15pm and the first class is FREE. If you want to come join me sometime, let me know!
